This 3-day workshop is a thorough walk-through of the encaustic collagraph method. Participants will get the chance to break all the rules of encaustic; using significantly less wax, minimal fusing, layering with textiles and different line types; etched, drypoint and relief. Encaustic wax will be used to build the surface and Akua Intaglio inks to print monoprints. The plates created can be reused and printed, again and again, allowing the ability to work in limited editions, multiples, or series. Plates can be added to or scraped away at any point in the process making the options limitless.

Create beautiful, tonal prints with this painterly printmaking method of making a plate. Learn to construct inexpensive plates of various sizes from plastic and monofilament mesh painted with black acrylic. Work your way back to white by layering polymer gels with brushes and textures. The plate will mirror and resemble your final image. Intaglio printing with non-toxic inks on rag papers yields dense, mezzotint-like surfaces which explore gesture, texture, and tonal effects. A wonderful print experience for all artists.

This 5-day workshop will be held in the brand new printmaking building at Edgewood Farm!

Creating Encaustic Collagraphs on YUPO

Saturday and Sunday, March 26-27, 2022

Using a combination of innovative printmaking materials, participants will create plates with hot wax on Yupo, a synthetic paper support. Images can be painted, stamped, textured, incised, and scraped to produce a high and low plate surface ready to ink as either a relief or intaglio. These plates can be combined with monotype and drypoint, are economical, easily cleaned, stored, and cut with scissors or utility knives. Akua soy-based inks will be used on a variety of print papers including washi (Japanese paper). Both hand and press printing options will be explored as well as the use of multiple color plates, transparency, and chine colle'. Part of the learning experience will include discussions of eastern and western papers, demonstrations, finished examples of all techniques and lots of individual attention. All are welcome; some print experience is helpful, but not necessary.
